1. Pages that load quickly. If your site does not load at least within ten or 15 seconds, chances are that most people will simply leave. You may have speedy Internet connection, but keep in mind that not all folks do. Remember, 56k modems do still exist.

2. Text on your pages should be easy to read. You will want the size of the text to be big enough, and a background color that does not obscure the text. To be on the safe side, it is recommended to use black text on a white background. If you would like to use a little more color, choose carefully, making sure that the page is still easy to read..

3. You will want your website to be easy to navigate. All text links and graphic elements such as buttons and tabs should be easy to read and use. Links found within your article should flow appropriately. You don%u2019t want your visitors leaving because they were not able to figure out how to get your Flash menu to work.

4. Both your website design and layout should be consistent with one another. If you were to switch from one style to another to often, you may confuse your visitors. It only makes sense that if the website design is suddenly too different people are bound to think that they are at another website altogether.

5. Stay away from music and sounds. Not many people like to suddenly be forced to listen to a certain type of music when they click on your site. They may already be listening to their own music. If you think that your site really does need music, turn it off by default and provide a button for visitors to click on if they want to listen.

6. Focus your web design on browser compatibility. For example, not all people use Internet Explorer. Be sure that your site can be viewed using Mozilla, Safari, Opera and Firefox. If at all possible, you may want to test your website on both a Mac and PC. Sites targeting markets such as technology should be careful, because these readers are more likely to use some of the newer browsers and gadgets.

7. Consider your website design for all screen resolutions. Chances are, you like to surf in 1240×1080 with your screen, but remember, some folks still use 800×600, or even 640×768! A website that looks great in high resolution may not be so easy to view correctly in 800×600.

If you have any doubts, consider these tips for improving your website design and test, test and test! You could ask for advice from friends or family if you want. They are not as familiar with your website design, and will likely be able to point out things that you overlooked.

I have seen a number of great articles on the web with people’s preferred Firefox addons. I agree with some them and have also found some new ones to play with. So to return the favour, so to speak, I am going to release what i think are the most useful Firefox addons in regard to web development and Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). An additional bonus is that ‘Top 10’s’ always make good link bait in SEO (there’s a tip for you SEOs and blog writers!). This list is written in no particular order so lets start…

1) ‘All in One SideBar‘ this, and it has to be said is my favorite, allows you to access and manage all your Firefox addons through a side bar which is incorporated in to your browser. This is real over kill if you are a normal web user, but for a developer it isn’t half handy. Highly recommended, therefore instead of having a link to the Firefox page, here is the link for the developers’ site to show my support. http://firefox.exxile.net/aios/index.php

2) ‘Web developer tool bar‘, I prefer this to the ever popular firebug, which i also have installed, although it doesn’t have any functions to debug javascript, it is a great tool for development and tests CSS on the fly. 3) ‘IE Tab‘ if you are a developer, you should already be using this as it allows you to switch to what your site looks like in IE while being in your Firefox browser. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1419 As for a test in later versions of IE, I recommend Multiple IE. http://tredosoft.com/Multiple_IE

4) ‘Grease Monkey‘ this allows you to alter the way a given web page is displayed by adding bits of javascript.https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/748 For instance, you can get a script for Grease Monkey that puts numbers next to your search results in Google. From http://www.addedbytes.com/tools/ Very useful for quick SEO queries.

7) ‘Delicious Bookmark’ because like many developers I use mutliple computers at home and at work. I uses Delicious so that I can easily access my bookmarks anywhere. 10) And finally, the ‘Smart Digg Button‘ this allows you to Digg articles like this straight into your Digg account.https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4878

Also, don’t make your font too small, or people will have problems reading your copy.

Make your website cross-browser compatible

If your website looks great in Internet Explorer but breaks horribly in Firefox and Opera, you will lose out on a lot of prospective visitors. So, always check how your website looks in different browsers. It’s best to have a set of browsers on your own computer, rather than relying on online services. You can also use the W3C validate -it may help with your website compatibility.

Avoid using scripting languages on your site

Try to use scripting languages to handle or manipulate data on your site, and not to create visual effects. Scripts are not supported across all browsers, so some visitors might miss important information because their web browser crashes.

Using website templates the right way

Website templates are very affordable these days and can save you a lot of hassle when you want to create a new layout. That’s the point of using a template… to save time and effort. You can go a long way by just changing the title, entering your keywords, put in some new graphics and appropriate details and you’re done.

Example: you find a nice template that suits your gardening hobby site, except the original designer has put an image of stamps in the header. You can then search for images of garden plants, or gardening tools, to replace the stamps for your hobby site.

Just be aware of using too popular templates. If many people use the same template, your site will not appear unique and your credibility as a
solid, different business will be tarnished. The last thing you want your site to do is appear generic just like your next-door neighbors. I hope these tips will help your to make a better performing website.

Within the first day of the release of Mozilla Firefox 3.0 , an unique world record was created. A record breaking 8,002,530 downloads took place for web browser Firefox 3.0. Mozilla officially made history with a new Guinness world record for the largest number of software downloads in a 24-hour period.

According to the Marketing head Paul Kim, “The enthusiasm and creativity of Firefox fans was key to making this happen”. He told the BBC News: “The notion of going for a world record, as gooky and nutty as it may have sounded, was a really sticky idea. It was an idea that translated really well across national borders and to all different kinds of people around the world.” It was called an extremely impressive accomplishment by Gareth Deaves of Guinness World Records.

Some security firms claimed to found flaws in the software on the very first day of its release. Within few hours of Firefox 3.0 debut, DV Labs/Tipping Point reported a flaw that potentially let an attacker take over a personal computer if a user clicked on a booby-trapped link. Mr Kim told the BBC News: “Firefox users are safe. We have a patch in the works and hope to release it very soon.”

It seems happy timing for the Firefox as its market share reached to more than 19%, second best to Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. According to the statistics firm Net Applications, a substantial part of the gain came from rival IE and predicted that it would break the 20% share bar very soon. Mr Kim said: “We offer the best browsing experience and this shows people are getting the message and voting with their browser choice.”

2. Defragment your disk regularly. Defragmenting your disk once in every two or three months is a good way to ensure that your computer stays in top condition. Fragmentation happens when your computer’s operating system fail to allocate enough contiguous space to store a complete file as a unit and instead places parts of it in gaps between other files. To illustrate this, let us compare it to a library where some users do not return the books to the proper place after they read them. The books in the library are arranged in a manner that would make it easy to locate any particularly book easily. If many books are no longer in their proper places it would take longer to find them. A fragmented file system is like a library where the books are not in their proper places.Think of defragmentation as a process of returning the books in their proper places so that it will be easier to find them using the card catalog. Windows XP and Vista have their own built in defragmenting software but they are very slow. There are good defragmentation software that can do the job in a fraction of the time it would take for the Windows default defragmenter to finish. I recommend Power Defragmenter and Contig.

3. Clean your Windows Registry regularly. When your Windows registry is clogged with bad keys and entries the performance of your computer will slow down. There manual cleaning of the registry is not advisable to non-experts. There are some good registry cleaners like RegVac and Registry Mechanic that are very easy and safe to use.

4. Regularly get updates for your operating system and other important software. Some softwares do not offer automatic updates so it is advisable to regularly check with their website and download and install updates manually.

5. Delete cookies.It is a good advice to periodically delete internet cookies to ensure that your internet runs at optimum speed. It is easy to delete cookies with Firefox, just go to Tools then click on Options. Select the “Privacy” tab then click the “Show cookies” button. Another box with the “remove cookies” button will pop up. Click on the “remove cookies” button. If you are using Internet Explorer 7, do this: exit Internet Explorer 7 then click start, then click run, then type inetcpl.cpl in the text field and click enter. The General tab will appear. Click “delete” under browsing history in the Internet Properties dialog box. The delete browsing history dialog box appears. Click delete cookies. Click “Yes”.

6. Regularly run Windows XP’s error-checking computer maintenance tool. It can be found by right-clicking the local disk icon in My Computer folder and selecting “Properties”. Click the Tools menu and click on the Error-Checking button. In the dialog box that pops up you can choose to run the error checker and scan for errors, or also fix system errors as it finds them.

7. Uninstall programs that you do not use. These programs occupy space in your hard disk. the more space you have in your hard disk the faster your computer runs.

8. Always run your computer on a UPS. Sudden electric surges are harmful to your computer.

9. If you are familiar with the inside of the casing, physically clean your computer. Remove dust that gather in the casing with cloth or vacuum. Be careful not to damage any part though.

10. Give your computer a rest by turning it off every once in a while.

It is important to maintain your computer. If you follow the above tips you can be assured that your PC will last longer and will always have optimum performance.

Anybody else tired of these commercials before watching the NBA highlights? I just ran into the solution so I thought I would share it with you. There was often a little infomercial that came on when I was going to watch the Lebron James and Dwayne Wade highlights, and I was tired of having to sit through those. So here’s how to stop it.

First go to Google and type in Adblock and then click on adblock plus.org. Then click on installation, and click install Adblock Plus 1.1.3. Click on allow, and then install now, and then you can click restart to complete.

Restart Firefox. When it comes back you will see a little add-on screen. You can just “x” out of that. And then, you can go to the little stop sign, click on preferences, and make sure the filter subscription is U.S.A. And after that there should be no more infomercials before the NBA highlights.

Try it out for yourself to see if it it worked. Start it again and see if where your two minute infomercial comes on for every highlight is still playing. It should be skipped. No infomercial. Anyways, a lot of people were getting pretty annoyed about that. A lot of flaming is going on right now on the NBA channel, but it’s pretty easy to stop. The thing is you do have to have Firefox or other compatible browsers to be able to do this. So, hope that’s helpful.
